Valentine’s  day is of special significance for couples in love. This practice which started way back in Rome gained popularity in all the countries of the world .It is celebrated on the 14th of February  every year in memory of Saint Valentine .It is a common practice among couples in love to gift one another on this special day. The gifts may be as simple as a flower or something magnificent like precious jewellery. Even though it is not a public holiday in any country of  the world Valentine’s day is a well known celebration of sorts.

Why is it called Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day got its name from Saint Valentine who was a Catholic priest. He is said to have lived in Rome in the 3rd century. During this time, Claudius II was the emperor of Rome. He had a set of stringent rules in place which prevented soldiers from getting married. However Saint Valentine was against this idea. So he helped soldiers to get married secretly. This angered the emperor and he imprisoned the saint. But even while in prison Saint Valentine helped his jailor’s blind daughter to regain back her lost eyesight. It is also found that the Catholic saint used to write letters to his jailor’s daughter which were signed as ‘from your Valentine’. On getting to know about all this, The King   executed Saint Valentine on the 14th of February 270.Thus his death anniversary is being celebrated every year as Valentine’s day.

Valentine gifts.

The tradition of gifting a loved one on Valentine’s Day began in the Victorian era in England. People started gifting each other with handmade greeting cards initially .These cards came to be known as Saint Valentine’s day cards and were decorated with numerous things like figures of Cupid, flowers, hearts, ribbons ,lace etc. Later on flowers especially Red roses were the preferred gift of choice to express love on this day.

Nowadays people are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing Valentine’s day gifts. The popular gift choices for Valentine’s day are beautiful flower bouquets, chocolates, soft toys etc. which can be easily purchased from ecommerce sites like Lovenwishes online gifts.
