Educating on Racism

Racism… you would think the whole idea of hatred and the use of racial slurs would be a thing of the past… it’s not.  We are in constant reminder of what we came from and what we were brought out of.  The fight to end racial remarks and hatred towards the opposite race will continue, but it’s up to our generation to teach the next to love one another and discontinue the use of racial remarks.  With a country that derived from battles and wars to create equality, we should be able to embrace one another and end racial slurs such as the word nigger.  Children are being taught about the history and the struggle to defeat this word, but what is sometimes left out… the meaning.  The children are not being taught how offensive it is to speak those negative words.

Justin Bieber, a young pop star and idol for the youth has taken his place in the media quite often to his full advantage, and not in a positive way.  He has done a lot of terrible things (i.e. DUI, vandalism) and have been forgiven of those things.  But when does it end?  His recent exposure, changing the words from his song “One less lonely Girl” to “One less lonely nigger,” Bieber sings about joining the KKK and killing a nigger.  Whether parents realize this or not, the entertainment industry greatly effects their children.  We’ve heard “Education is the Key” time and time again.  But are we the teacher or the student?  Children need to understand that words do hurt, and those words could affect their future.  It is our job to teach right from wrong.  Not only be a teacher, but a leader as well.
