The eating disorder is a type of illness that causes a severe disturbance, and it affects the well-being of the individuals and can do damage to your overall health and wellness. Those who have the eating disorder will not get nutrients to maintain a healthy body. They are at the risk of heart disease and kidney failure, if not cured effectively.

It can affect people of any age or gender. Often this disorder is seen in teenagers and young adults. Eating disorders are mainly getting caused by an individual's dissatisfied feeling of his body. It has many risk factors for being an eating disorder patient. Normally eating disorder gets seen mostly in females compared to males. Females in their teen years are prone to this wellness issue, but saying that males are also getting affected by it.

Some main eating disorder types are:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Individual with this disorder will refuse to eat enough due to the intense fear of gaining weight.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: It gets characterized by intake of a large amount of food in short time followed by an attempt to get rid of the food consumed and avoid weight gain through excessive exercise or forced vomiting.
  • Binge-Eating Disorder: The individual who suffers from this disorder will frequently be losing control over their eating. They will be eating more food until they feel uncomfortably full.

According to research reports, one child out of four children diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa is male. In the case of Bulimia Nervosa, it gets mostly found in females. Both males and females are equally found to have Binge-Eating Disorder.

People think that eating disorder is a female issue for the reason that males are less serious and much less likely to be diagnosed with an eating disorder problem. But the reality is that males also have similar and same risk factor issues as female. They both have same sign and symptoms of eating disorders. Some of the specific risk factors for men are:

Dieting: Dieting results the experience of craving foods which contain high fat and sugar content. It leads to an obsession with foods and which in turns shall lead to overweight and may result in becoming bulimic.

Sports: Those who participate in sports that demand slim and fitness, they should engage in severe dieting and fluid restrictions. Some surveys found that high-performance producing male athletes have shown eating disorder, dieting disorder and poor attitude towards their body image.

Profession: Some jobs demand to look a certain way in slim and lean structure, for example, the careers such as acting, modeling, professional dancing, flight attendants, etc.

Over Exercise: Being concerned with their body image and fitness will lead men to excessive exercise and strict diet. It results in forming a severe eating disorder.

Men might hesitate to talk about their symptoms. Most of the men are less likely to admit that they have a problem. Men feel pressure to be strong physically, and their lack of confidence in their body image leads to a disorder.
