How to Create a Relaxing and Productive Environment in your Home Office

Your home office is your creative space. It's where most of your ideas are born and come together. Keeping this area free from clutter and distractions is key to helping the creativity flow. If you walk into your home office today and start to think about everything and anything other than getting work done, it might be time for a room makeover.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to set up this space for a relaxing and productive environment. Start by organizing and clearing out clutter, adjusting the lighting, or adding an indoor plant to bring in some greenery into the area. Use these seven tips to help you set up your ideal office for maximum productivity.

  1. Clear the clutter.

If you find it hard to get anything done in your home office, start with your desk. Do you have things on it that you don't even use? Do you see more pens than you'll ever need in your lifetime? Invest in storage options to clear the clutter and get organized. Shred any old documents, donate what you no longer need, and throw away anything that can't be recycled, gifted, or donated. Once you clear out all the unnecessary objects from your desk, start adding a few things that you know you'll use to help keep your mind focused so you can smash that to-do list.

  1.  Adjust the lighting.

Position your desk near a window to take advantage of natural light to get your brain in gear for productivity. If you don't have a window in your home office, opt for a different lightbulb. Sometimes all it takes is changing the lighting to create a more inviting environment. You don't want anything too bright or too dull. If you're not sure where to start, test out a few different options and select the one that makes you feel most comfortable. If you want a desk lamp, make sure it's something that doesn't take up too much space. Something sleek and not too bulky should do the trick.

  1. Add green space.

Plants can add a lot of character to your workspace. They help purify the air by removing toxins so you can breathe in fresh ideas. Through a process called photosynthesis, plants convert carbon dioxide that we exhale and turn it into fresh oxygen. Having something green can also bring nature into your space and create a more relaxing environment. Indoor plants are easy to take care of, and some require minimal watering. Take, for example, a succulent - it doesn't require a lot of light, and if you forget to water it now and then it will still be okay. Plants can make your home office space more inviting and make it feel like a stress-free zone, which in turn will boost your creativity.

  1. Sit (or stand) properly at your desk.

You should feel comfortable when you first sit at your desk. Check your posture and make sure nothing is getting in the way of your mouse or keyboard. If you want to add more zen to your day, set up an ergonomic desk. Find your natural posture and sit in a comfortable chair. When you're sitting, keep your elbows close to your body when typing on your keyboard. It should feel natural, comfortable, and free from strains. Your computer should be at eye level to reduce fatigue and stress on your neck.

Upgrading to a standing desk will give you the flexibility to choose if you want to work sitting down or standing up. You might enjoy having the option to switch things up if you find yourself experiencing a creativity block. If you're trying to decide which is better, a standing desk versus a traditional desk, it depends on your style. While some people prefer to use a standing desk to help them stay energized, others prefer typing while sitting down in a comfortable space. Choose what works best for you!

  1. Accessorize your work station.

Add desk accessories to keep your desk organized and improve efficiency. A pen and tool holder on your desk can hold items and keep your office tidy, so you don't have to dig for a pen in your drawer. A leather desk pad can let visitors know that you mean business, and you're ready to get work done. It can also prevent your laptop or mousepad from sliding around.

  1. Stay connected and close to a power outlet.

When you spend hours on your computer, you eventually have to plug it in. Getting up can become a distraction. Position your desk close to a power outlet in your room, so you can plug in your computer or phone when the battery needs a charge. The last thing you want is to lose any of your work because your computer died and you forgot to hit save. If there isn't an outlet near your desk, find an extension cord that is long enough to reach. Organize dangling cords by rolling them up and securing them with a string or rubber band.

  1. Choose colours that soothe your mind.

Whether you work from home and spend hours in your home office, or only use it to plan your day, create a space that makes you feel happy and relaxed as soon as you walk in the door. Look at the current colours in your home office. Does the current colour scheme make you feel calm and ready to take on the day? If the answer is no, start incorporating colours like blue and neutral tones for a calming and soothing effect.

Remember to set boundaries to avoid distractions, use a schedule to manage your time, and keep your office organized so you can accomplish all your tasks. Use these tips to set up your home office for success.
