Painting the interior of a home is one of the most popular do-it-yourself home improvement projects because it’s within the abilities of the average homeowner. That doesn’t mean it’s completely fool-proof however. To avoid a shoddy paint job, here are four easy painting tips you should follow.

1. Buy the right tools. You don’t need the most expensive painting tools money can buy. But you also don’t want to buy the cheapest tools. Buy tools of decent quality and make sure you have everything you need including things to protect the room while you paint.

2. Prep your new roller. Before you use your new paint roller for the first time, wrap it with painter’s tape and remove it. This will remove loose particles so you can paint with more precision.

3. Prep the room properly. You’ll definitely want to cover every surface in the room unless you want paint on it. A think plastic covering is fine for covering furniture but spend a little more on a thicker plastic, or painter’s cloth to cover the floor so it won’t move around on you as you’re trying to work.

4. Affix painter’s tape securely. Use a putty knife or similar tool to firmly press painter’s tape against surfaces so paint has no chance of seeping beneath the tape and spoiling your hard work.
