What are airbags?

An airbag is an inflatable cushion of a vehicle designed to protect car occupants from grave injuries in cases of accidents, additionally, it is a pillow made from designed and vented nylon fabric that is filled with nitrogen gas once deployed.

Basically, it is a component of ACRS, which means Air Cushion Restraint System, since it is designed as a supplementary protection offered by seatbelts, hence it is also termed as Airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)

Accordingly, airbags are intended to enhance seatbelt protection, by restraining and helping to distribute the impact exerted on the human body during a collision to lower the deceleration rate and possibility of injury.

Types of Airbags

1. Side Airbags

Side airbags protect you from side impacts. Newer cars usually offer two kinds of side airbags. These are the torso airbags, which are normally found in the side seats (some are in the middle of front seats), consequently, protecting the torso from the impact, conversely, most cars only have airbags in the front seats.

On the other hand, the second side airbag is termed as the curtain airbag which deploys from the ceiling to protect the occupants head.

2. Front Airbags

This includes the driver's airbag which deploys from the steering wheel and the passenger's airbag which expands from the  dashboard. Nowadays, most new cars are designed with weight sensor at the passenger seat to stop the airbag from expanding especially if a child younger than thirteen years old is sitting in the front seat.

3. Knee Airbags

To further improve car safety, many automakers are also including airbags that are dedicated to car occupant's knees, these are deployed from under a car's dashboard since most accidents cause shattered knee caps due to high-speed collisions..

4. Inflatable Seat Belts

There's a new automobile brand that offers a new airbag, it's an inflatable seat belt, whereby upon collision, this seat belt aids by spreading the pressure over an occupant's body.

Where Can I Buy Airbags for Sale?

Generally, used airbags are much affordable than brand new ones, likewise, if they have never been deployed, therefore they are generally safe as compared to new ones.

However, we recommend to best verify with your favorite insurance company first before deciding on purchasing used airbags. Know that there are policies that void insurance coverage if you opt for used airbags to be installed.

You can do a Google search and type local junkyards near me to find a list of used airbags within your vicinity.
